It was a hot
summer day in Los Angeles
and metal was in the air! The annual Sounds of the Underground tour came
to the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Metal gods GWAR weren’t the headliner
but one of the focal point of the day. Their midday set was worth every
penny of the ticket price even though their set was short. With GWAR classics
like “The Horror of Yig,” and “Maggots,” as
well as some of their newer material like “Bring Back the Bomb”. GWAR is
known for their lavish stage show, which was a crowd favorite with
gallons of fake blood and pus were sprayed out over the pit area. It’s
easy to see why GWAR has and will continue to keep the metal heads
banging.
As the night came
to a loud close Lamb of God, the headlining band, took the stage. This
band has seen big growth in the past few years. For the most part Lamb of
God’s stage presence was nothing write home
about, especially after a stellar set by Clutch and GWAR, but the crowd
loved them. And isn’t that what this crazy business is all about. As I as
exiting the venue I couldn’t help but see the continued long lines at t-shirt
stands and if the success of merchandising is a judge of how this show
when, then I think metal is here to stay! I look forward to next years
Sounds of the Underground as the potential is great for this tour to
rival Ozzfest in 2006.
